Job Description of Mechanical Systems Heat & Frost Insulator
The work involves the application, “rough in” and “finish” of various insulating materials to hot and cold surfaces, such as pipe and associated fittings, duct, vessels and equipment. Materials in the form of pre-molded pipe insulation, flat block and blanket are constructed from fiberglass, calcium silicate, mineral wool and various coatings. The work is manual and involves the use of hand tools, which are to be purchased by the applicant.
The work is generally associated with large industrial or commercial projects such as power plants, nuclear power houses, heavy manufacturing or processing installations including refrigeration. Smaller commercial work would include, for the most part, plumbing, and heating/air conditioning insulation in such buildings as schools, churches, apartment complexes, shopping centers, hospitals, and occasionally, underground “tunnel” or “ditch” work.
Like all construction, the work may be in town, but can also be located away from populated areas, and will require the individual to travel and have dependable, year round transportation. The expense for travel, room, and meals is partially reimbursed through a travel allowance and the hourly wage is commensurate with the wages of the other Building Trades.
Physical Requirements and Exposure
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Almost all work is performed from ladders or scaffolds; ranging from six foot and up, and from adjustable height swinging stages.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high precarious places; and in outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. In that the nature of insulation has continual exposure to airborne particles, use of respiratory protection is generally required. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
